Title: Establishing the Texas Congressional Redistricting Commission

Vote to pass a bill that that establishes the Texas Congressional Redistricting Commission, with sole authority to create or modify plans for Congressional districts.

Highlights:

  • Requires the 9 members of the Commission to be selected according to the following (Sec. 1):
    • 2 individuals appointed by a majority vote of the members belonging to the majority party in the Texas House of Representatives;
    • 2 individuals appointed by a majority vote of the members belonging to the minority party in the Texas House of Representatives;
    • 2 individuals appointed by a majority vote of the members belonging to the majority party in the Texas Senate;
    • 2 individuals appointed by a majority vote of the members belonging to the minority party in the Texas Senate; and
    • 1 individual to serve as a nonvoting member and presiding officer of the Commission, appointed by a vote of at least 5 of the other members of the Commission.
  • Prohibits individuals from serving on the Commission if they, within the previous 2 years, have held an elective public office or have held an office in a political party (Sec. 1).
  • Prohibits members of the Commission from being a candidate for elective public office and from actively participating in or contributing to a political campaign of a candidate for state or federal elective office (Sec. 1).
