Title: Repeals Limit on Number of Charter Schools

Highlights:

  • Increases the maximum number of charter schools that may be established in the state from 150 to (Sec. 502):
    • 300 until December 31, 2012; and
    • 500 until December 31, 2014.
  • Repeals the cap on charter schools, effective December 31, 2014 (Sec. 502).
  • Specifies the criteria to be considered when deciding to issue a charter school contract including, but not limited to, the following criteria (Sec. 503):
    • The population of the county in which the charter school will be located;
    • The graduation rate of the school district where the charter school will be located;
    • The number of schools in proximity to the proposed location; and
    • The number of students on waiting lists for charter schools in proximity to the proposed location.
  • Authorizes a charter school to be located in, or in a part of, an existing public school (Sec. 504, 524, & 556).
  • Prohibits a charter school from operating at any site other than the sites authorized under contract (Sec. 504, 524, & 556).
