Vote to pass a bill that requires a social networking website to remove personal identifying information upon request of a registered user.

Highlights:

• Requires a social networking website to remove the “personal identifying information” of a registered user within 96 hours of his or her request or upon the request of the user’s parent or guardian if the user is less than 18 years of age (Sec. 1).

• Defines “personal identifying information” as certain information including, but not limited to, the following information (Sec. 1):
• An individual’s address;
• An individual’s telephone number;
• An individual’s social security number; and
• An individual’s bank account or credit card numbers.

• Authorizes a social networking website to require an individual requesting the removal of personal identifying information to include a statement attesting to the accuracy of his or her request (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that a social networking website is not required to remove personal identifying information if federal or state law requires the website to maintain the information (Sec. 1).

• Establishes a civil penalty of up to $10,000 for a violation of this bill (Sec. 1).
