Vote to pass a bill that authorizes home-schooled students to participate in public school interscholastic programs.

Highlights:

  • Authorizes a student who is receiving home instruction to participate in public school interscholastic programs if the student meets certain requirements, including, but not limited to, the following (Sec. 1):
    • The student is receiving home instruction in compliance with state law;
    • The student has demonstrated academic progress for at least 2 consecutive years;
    • The student is in compliance with all state immunization requirements; and
    • The student is under the age of 19.
  • Limits the eligibility of a student receiving home instruction to participation in interscholastic programs at the school serving the attendance zone in which the student lives (Sec. 1).
  • Authorizes a public school to charge “reasonable fees” to a student receiving home instruction to cover the cost of participation in an interscholastic program (Sec. 1). 
  • Authorizes a local school board to choose whether or not to implement a policy permitting students who are receiving home instruction to participate in interscholastic programs at its schools (Sec. 1).
  • Specifies that the provisions of this bill expire on July 1, 2020 (Sec. 2).
