Title: Establishes a Delay on Class Size Restrictions

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that authorizes the delay of funding to reduce class size and increase teacher staffing for grades K-12.

Highlights:

  • Authorizes a 4-year delay of implementing voter-approved Initiative No. 1351, which increases funding to reduce class sizes and increase school staffing, for the following “educational reasons” (Sec. 1):
    • The greatest improvements in student outcomes are achieved by funding class size reductions in early grades;
    • The teacher education programs in Washington are not estimated to produce satisfactory teachers to accommodate the class size reductions established by Initiative No. 1351; and
    • The implementation of the class size reduction requires time to plan and build new classrooms.
  • Extends the gradual implementation of funding established in the provisions of Initiative No. 1351 to be reached by September 1, 2022 (Sec. 3).

NOTE: THIS LEGISLATION NEEDED A TWO-THIRDS MAJORITY VOTE TO PASS
