Title: Increases Sales Tax

Vote to pass a bill that increases the sales tax, effective June 1, 2016.

Highlights:

  • Increases the sales tax from 4 percent to 4.5 percent (Sec. 1).
  • Appropriates percentages of the proceeds from the increase in sales tax to the following designations (Sec. 17):
    • 63 percent to increasing teacher salaries by school districts;
    • 34 percent to reducing property tax levies for general education for all classes of property; and
    • 3 percent to increasing instructor salaries at postsecondary technical institutes. 
  • Requires that each school district’s increase in average teacher compensation from fiscal year 2016 to fiscal year 2017 to equal at least 85 percent of the district’s increase in state aid to general education funding (Sec. 21).
