Title: Establishes Electoral Districts for City of Asheville

Vote to pass a bill that establishes electoral districts for the City of Asheville, effective January 1, 2017.

Highlights:

  • Establishes 6 districts in Asheville that city council members reside in and are elected from, whose staggered terms will begin after the election of 2019 (Sec. 1).
  • Prohibits the 6 district structure of the City Council of Asheville from being altered until after the return of the 2020 census (Sec. 3).
  • Specifies that the mayor is nominated and elected from the city at large (Sec. 1).
  • Amends the length of term for a city councilmember as follows (Secs. 1 & 2):
    • For the 2017 election, all individuals elected will serve 2 year terms;
    • For the 2019 election, the 3 individuals who receive the most votes will serve 4 year terms and the remaining 3 individuals elected will serve 2 year terms; and
    • For the 2021 election and all elections thereafter, all individuals elected will serve 4 year terms.
