Vote to pass a bill that establishes a "green new deal" in Maine.

Highlights:

 

  • Requires that by January 1, 2040 an electricity provider in this state demonstrate to the commission that no less than 80 percent of their supply sources for retail electricity be accounted for by renewable resources (Part A, Sec A-1).

  • Defines “the commission” as the Commission on a Just Transition to a Low-carbon Economy (Part D, Sec. 2).

  • Specifies that the commission shall consist of 13 members appointed as follows, including (Part D, Sec. 2):

    • 3 members appointed by the President of the Senate;

    • 3 members appointed by the Speaker of the House;

    • 3 members appointed by the Governor;

    • The Director of Efficiency Maine Trust;

    • The Commissioner of Labor or their designee;

    • The Chair of the Public Utilities Commission or their designee; and

    • The Director of the Governor’s Energy Office of their designee.

  • Specifies that the commission shall meet 6 times a year and assist the Public Utilities Commission in the evaluation of energy programing including, the programs of the Efficiency Maine Trust and the Maine State Housing Authority (Part D, Sec. 2).
