Vote to amend and pass a bill that authorizes compensation for college athletes.
Highlights:

Establishes the right for every student athlete enrolled at an institution of higher education to be paid for the use of their name, image, and likeness, and to hire one or more persons to represent the student athlete’s interests (Sec. 1).

Prohibits compelling a student athlete from forfeiting these rights in order to participate in intercollegiate athletics (Sec. 1).

Prohibits an athletic institution from upholding any rule, requirement, standard, or other limitation that prevents a student athlete of the institution from earning compensation from the use of the student athlete’s name, image, or likeness (Sec. 2).

Prohibits a student athlete’s earning of such compensation from affecting the student athlete’s scholarship eligibility (Sec. 2).

Prohibits an institution or athletic association from (Sec. 2):
-
Providing compensation to a current or prospective student athlete;
-
Providing remuneration to a prospective student athlete for the prospective student athlete’s athletic ability or performance or potential athletic ability or performance; and
-
Preventing a student athlete from obtaining professional representation in relation to contracts or legal matters.

Prohibits a student athlete from entering into a contract providing compensation to the student athlete if the contract conflicts with a team contract of the team for which the student athlete competes (Sec. 2).

Specifies that a team contract of an institution’s athletic program entered into, modified, or renewed on or after the effective date of this section cannot prohibit a student athlete from using the student athlete’s name, image, or likeness for a commercial purpose when the student athlete is not engaged in official team activities (Sec. 2).

Authorizes a student athlete aggrieved by an action in violation of this section to bring an action for injunctive relief (Sec. 2).

Establishes the effective date of this act as January 1, 2023 (Sec. 4).
