Title: Prohibits "Addictive" Designs and Features Aimed at Minors from being Used by Social Media Companies
Vote to pass a bill that prohibits a social media company from using a design or feature that causes a minor to have an addiction to the company's social media platform and initiates other forms of social media regulations for kids and teens.
Defines “addiction” for the purposes of this bill as use of a social media platform that (Part I, Sec. 3):
Indicates substantial preoccupation or obsession with, or the user’s substantial difficulty to cease or reduce use of the social media platform; and
Causes physical, mental, emotional developmental, or material harm.
Prohibits a social media company from using a design or feature that causes a minor to have an addiction to the company's social media platform and initiates other forms of social media regulations for kids and teens (Part II, Sec. 4).
Specifies that social media companies shall receive a civil penalty of $250,000 for each practice, design, or feature shown to have caused addiction (Part II, Sec. 4).
Establishes that this bill takes effect May 3, 2023 (Part V, Sec. 8).
