Vote to pass a bill that authorizes schools in which 60% of the building is not being used for classroom instruction to be converted to a private charter school.

Highlights:

  • Requires the governing body of a school corporation to conduct a review of the usage of school buildings to determine if the school needs to close any buildings annually (Sec. 3). 

  • Authorizes the closing of a school building if (Sec. 3): 

    • The building had been used at one point for classroom instruction; 

    • The building has been underutilized for classroom instruction for the the current school year and the two school years immediately preceding the current school year;

    • The school is not subjected to a transitional plan as of the end of the school year before the school building  is required to be closed; and 

    • The school has an alternative building with sufficient capacity that is within a 20 minute travel time for a building they want to shut down that was used for instruction in the past year.
