What is the Political Courage Test?

New Jersey Gubernatorial Election 2021 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
No c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
In no uncertain terms, our administration opposes the new Texas law and would form coalitions with other governors throughout the country to ensure that should such laws make it to any governor's desk again, that governor would veto it. We certainly will.
No a) In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
Yes b) In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
We would consider raising New Jersey's wealth tax by a very small percentage. We would work to create a more equitable distribution of tax responsibility for small businesses and major corporations and for the top .01% of income earners and the rest of us. We would change the way that schools are funded and eliminate funding for charter schools. We would also advocate for a cut in the federal military budget of $800 billion. Just 25% of that would give us $200 billion to divide among 50 states or approximately $4 billion more to give each state.
No a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
No b) Should an individual under 18 accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
No d) Do you support the use of private prisons in New Jersey?
No e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
c. It truly depends on the specific federal law. We believe in the abolition of ICE, for example. We believe in the release of those held by ICE in New Jersey detention centers and an end to those contracts. e. Mandatory minimums are punitive and leave the judge no discretion. In addition, we hope that with the legalization of marijuana possessing marijuana would no longer be subject to penalty.
Yes a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
b) Do you support lowering state taxes on businesses as a means of promoting economic growth?
No c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
Yes d) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of New Jersey?
Yes e) Do you support requiring employers to provide paid family leave?
Yes f) Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
b. We want large corporations to pay their fair share of taxes. In 2019, corporate taxes accounted for less than 13% of the state's revenues, placing a huge burden on low-to-moderate income families. d) While we support an increase in the minimum wage, we would like to see it called a living wage - at a minimum of $22/hour. f) COVID-19 has wreaked havoc with our economy. Prior to COVID-19, small businesses in this state were struggling. We need to address that situation now and support use of Mutual Aid throughout the state.
a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in New Jersey?
No b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in New Jersey?
Yes d) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from New Jersey high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
Yes e) Do you support requiring instruction on racial discrimination, social justice, diversity, and inclusion in New Jersey public schools?
a. If this means continued use of the No Child Left Behind law, we would oppose that. Tying federal funds to students' performance on tests is unjust. We would end the state's commitment to charter schools and instead work to improve the quality of public schools. Local communities know their students best.
Yes a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes b) Do you support state government regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
Yes d) Do you support prohibiting single-use plastics in New Jersey like styrofoam, grocery bags and straws?
We support an immediate moratorium on granting permits to pipelines that transport fracked gas through our state. We also support a moratorium on new power plants that would use fracked gas or other fossil fuels for energy. New Jersey suffers from gentrification and overdevelopment. This results in water not having any place to go when it rains hard like it has this summer and now early fall. Our priority needs to be affordable housing, not continued gentrification and overdevelopment.
Yes a) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes b) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
No c) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
Yes d) Do you support automatic voter registration?
e) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
Yes c) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
d) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Yes b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through New Jersey's health care programs?
Yes c) Should an individual have the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
d) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
Yes e) Do you support requiring employers to provide paid medical leave?
f) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in New Jersey's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in New Jersey's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support greater efforts by the New Jersey state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
d) Do you support legislation that would hold guardians liable for damages caused by their child's bullying offenses?
d. Bullying is a serious problem that all too often is not addressed by the schools where the bullying takes place. We support holding people accountable for their actions, but are undecided whether this is the best way to do so. Our administration supports reparations for those of African descent and defunding and demilitarizing the police in order to address the issue of police brutality. We also support reparations for the state's indigenous and preservation of languages. We also support all measures that would make their presence in NJ more visible and address serious issues of hunger and poverty.
My administration would address on-going problems with the legalization of marijuana bill, so it truly equalizes/levels the playing field and expunges the records of those charged with possession in the past. We will advocate for a public bank, to allow the community to decide how our tax revenues should be spent. We will not divest from Unilever because Ben and Jerry's chooses not to sell its ice cream in Israeli occupied Palestine. We will work toward ranked choice voting and a change in ELEC law to allow all ballot qualified gubernatorial candidates to debate, not just those who raise $490,000.
My administration's top legislative priority would be the implementation of an Ecosocialist Green New Deal, one that would guarantee both environmental and economic sustainability and would provide for a workers' bill of rights. The state and the country must stop using fossil fuels now, not work toward 50% in 2030 and 100% in 2050. We need tuition-free public colleges, a living wage of $22, improved and expanded Medicare for All, rent and mortgage cancelation and continuation of unemployment supplements. We would pay for this by having major corporations pay their fair share in taxes and cutting the military budget federally.
