What is the Political Courage Test?

North Carolina State Legislative Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Pro-life a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
No b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yes c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
I do *not* support banning abortion while I do support any and all efforts to reduce abortions as close to zero as possible. Bans do not work and making criminals out of women will not work either. I would support a ban on non medically necessary abortions after the 1st trimester with on-demand available during the 1st but would only pair that with widespread ease of access to birth control and abortifacients etc.
Yes a) In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
No b) In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
c) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) Do you support a limit on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yes b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
No d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
No e) Do you support automatic voter registration?
No f) Do you support the removal of foreign citizens from state voting rolls?
Regarding voting. I firmly hold that all persons who are subject to the jurisdiction of the Constitution of the United States ought to have a right to vote for the persons who will enact and enforce the laws to which they are subject. And I mean all competent persons. That includes non-citizen residents regardless of how they got here.
No a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes b) Should an individual under 18 accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
No c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
No d) Do you support the use of private prisons in North Carolina?
No e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
No f) Do you support the prosecution of hate crimes as felonies?
Yes g) Do you support requiring state and local law enforcement to publicly disclose use-of-force data reports?
Regarding prosecuting minors as adults. This is something that should be at the discretion of the Courts, rather than a simple hard line. The Courts should have access to qualified mental health professionals to assess and determine that individual just as they do for any other form of trial competency question.
No a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes b) Do you support lowering state income taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
No d) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
No e) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of North Carolina?
No f) Do you support requiring employers to provide paid family leave?
No g) Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
COVID relief spending: We seriously mishandled COVID in this State and did decades of nearly irreversible economic damage while not effectively slowing its spread in North Carolina. Any and all support or bailouts should go straight to taxpayers, not business or corporate entities, and allow those taxpayers to "support" the firms they see fit with their money.
No a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in North Carolina?
No b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
No c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in North Carolina?
Yes d) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from North Carolina high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
I support a nearly complete disassembly of the State educational system. This system is a gasping, dinosauric, hulk that needs to be picked clean by scavengers. Teacher pay and benefits should be determined by County educational systems, not State. In some areas of NC teachers *do* need more pay but in others they do not. One size does *NOT* fit all.
No a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes b) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
d) Other or expanded principles:
No a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
No b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
No c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom after passing gun safety training?
No d) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
e) Other or expanded principles:
No a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
No b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through North Carolina's health care programs?
No c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yes d) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
No e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
No f) Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?
g) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in North Carolina's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in North Carolina's anti-discrimination laws?
No c) Do you support greater efforts by North Carolina state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
Yes d) Do you support local governments having the authority, without review by state authorities, to remove certain memorials or monuments from public property?
e) Other or expanded principles:
True Criminal Justice Reform was completely ignored in this test. We have to have true CJ reform and that will include cannabis/hemp legalization and deregulation, narcotics legalization, prior conviction amnesty for these, absolutely ending qualified immunity in this State, unequivocally ending Civil Asset Forfeiture, various iterations of "defund" that redirect critical resources to support and aid options instead of "compliance and control", professional liability insurance requirements for law enforcement and drastically increased education and training requirements, as well as ending policing for profit by limiting police ability to detain and stop citizens.
Our State educational system takes up the lion's share of our State budget and therefore will be the most ripe for trimming and cost reduction. However, the most urgent task before our State is living up to the promise of "liberty and *justice* for all" and therefore, at least in the near short term, my #1 legislative priority will be serious, comprehensive, criminal justice reform. As outlined earlier.
