New Jersey Congressional Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
The right to control one's own body is fundamental to freedom, particularly since the decision to have a child requires a lifetime of commitment. The government should not decide for women when, why or how to have a baby. The government should not decide if a woman is ready for the responsibility of parenting, if a deformed child is viable, or if a rape victim should give birth. These are the most personal choices. There is no freedom or privacy is women cannot make their own decisions on such matters.
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes Do you support expanding federal funding to support entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare?
We should spend less money on military powere and invest much more into the health, wealth and happiness of our people, which means we should 'reverse Reaganomics' and restore the American Dream. America had top tax rates over 90 percent with a booming economy & a large, prosperous and growing middle class. Since adopting Reaganomics, nothing good has trickled down to average workers. Most Americans have lost ground while a tiny fraction has grown immeasurably rich, using wealth to further isolate the top one percent. This has destroyed the concept of equality, corrupted our government, denied justice to the people.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
We should outlaw bribery in all its forms, including the private funding of political campaigns.
No Do you support increasing defense spending?
The United States almost spends 36% of the world total on the military, as much as the next eight countries combined. As Martin Luther King said very long ago, The United States is the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today. America should be a beacon of peace, freedom, & opportunity not only for Americans but for all the members of our human family. If we were to invest in clean renewable energy, water desalinization and food production, we could end most of the causes for war without losing security.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
Reaganomics has been entirely discredited. It does not work and lowering corporate taxes does not promote economic growth. In the 40 years since implementing 'trickle down' theories, almost every American lost wealth, saw quality of life decline and witnessed repeated economic disasters. Inequality is extreme and poverty is widespread. On the other hand, Keynesian economics ended the Great Depression, allowed America to win WWII, fueled massive investments in transprtation, education, defense, space exploration and other pursuits. With top tax rates over 90 percent, we had a booming economy that created a large, prosperous & growing middle class for 50 years.
Yes Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
Spending on education in an investment in both national defense and prosperity. There has always been a remarkable return on investment from education and as technology and science play a greater role in human lives, understanding the universe and sharing knowledge because more practical and important. When you look at the benefits of great educational advancement, from the printing press to the various expansions of free public education, it is impossible not to see why we should insure such advantages to all our people. There are no differences in facts, logic or learning simply because one crosses a state line!
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
The United States must lead the world on an urgent mission to end the use of fossil fuels, or the climate crisis will grow worse.
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Gun violence in America has reached intolerable levels. The Second Amendment will not be threatened by common sense measures to reduce senseless bloodshed. The American people overwhelmingly support common sense reforms that will address these issues, but powerful special interests have drowned out their voices. It is time for that to change.
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
Yes Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?
I support Medicare for All, which is cheaper than the country's current health care spending and covers everyone. The Obamacare repeal bills proposed by Republicans would kill Americans and leave millions unable to afford necessary medical care without going into bankrupcy. It has been the goal of American presidents since Teddy Roosevelt to create a universal health care system guaranteeing treatment to all people in times of need. Every other major industrialized nation has done so. Universal single-payer health care means comprehensive coverage for all Americans.
No Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
No Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Republicans abuse immigration for politics or maintain a white majority, should be punished for overt racism. Instead of solving the problems in the system, right wing politicians have exploited immigration to secure votes from people who would not respond to more honest and healthy policies. Congress should enact a measure like the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013, which would have made it possible for many undocumented immigrants to gain legal status and eventually citizenship, reduced U.S. debt by $700 billion, and improved border security.
Yes Should the United States use military force to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a weapon of mass destruction (for example: nuclear, biological, chemical)?
Yes Do you support reducing military intervention in Middle East conflicts?
The USA must provide leadership in the world, but with less reliance on force then on diplomacy, economic influence and genuine cooperation, collaboration and community. That does not mean we should retreat from our principles, but we should hold nations equally accountable and live up to our own values. We can feed and educate the entire population for less cost and risk than it would take to subjugate mankind, so we should pursue world peace as if our lives depended on it. From such a position, we can enforce the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Yes Do you generally support removing barriers to international trade (for example: tariffs, quotas, etc.)?
There should be universally adopted practices that allow fair and free trade, designed to benefit consumers and workers. Too much emphasis in trade is focused on the comfort and success of capital rather than environmental protection, consumer rights, or justice. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights asserts that no one shall be held in slavery or servitude; everyone has the right to free public education, to freedom of movement and to join trade unions.
I want to end bribery in all forms, which would help restore democracy in this republic because our government has been betrayed, subverted and corrupted. Climate change presents deadly consequences for the world, so this is the second most important priority. It means transitioning the world economy to stop using fossil fuels. To assure continuity and completion, this shoud entail a comprehensive approach such as that described as a Green New Deal. I also believe government must provide free public education from pre-K through college, expanded and improved Medicare for All, plus reform of our justice system.
