Ryan Reid has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2019 Political Courage Test.
Pro-life | a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
No | b) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yes | c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
I believe that abortion should only be an option in the exceedingly rare cases when the life of the mother is in jeopardy, and only then at the mother's discretion. Some of the closest people to me in my life were the product of rape. I can't imagine my life without them, and the world has been made better by their being in it. Punish the rapist to the fullest extent of the law, and toughen penalties so that we can better protect women. But do not punish the child. |
1) Budget Stabilization:Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Louisiana's budget.
Yes | a) Do you support local governments' say over the Industrial Tax Exemption Program (ITEP), which allows approved manufacturing companies to be exempt from paying local property taxes for up to ten years?
Yes | b) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions
No | c) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees
No | d) An income tax increase on any tax bracket
I think we could do with a reduction in salary among our some of our elected officials. Further, tax increase do nothing but drive out of the state or out of business those who could be working and paying taxes at a lower rate. I want to spur the economy by letting people keep more of their own money. That way, they can engage in more voluntary transactions. the more they are willing to spend in multiple transactions, the more revenue we'll see at a state level. It has to come with relieving some of the burden our taxpayers face. |
Yes | a) Do you support a limit on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yes | b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes | c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Yes | d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
No | e) Do you support automatic voter registration?
Support whomever you choose, and corporations and unions should be able to do the same, but they should also follow the same types of regulations as individuals. |
Yes | a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes | b) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
Yes | c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
Yes | d) Do you support legislation that would ban holding cell phones while driving?
e) Other or expanded principles: |
Yes | a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes | b) Do you support lowering state income taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes | c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
No | d) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
Yes | e) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
No | f) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Louisiana?
No | g) Do you support requiring employers to provide paid family leave?
Yes | h) Do you support using toll revenue to help fund a new bridge over the Mississippi River?
I would support spending to bolster economic growth in areas such as tourism. The majority of spending needs to be cut, though. Lowering taxes and reducing red tape will provide our strongest means of economic growth. |
No | a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Louisiana?
Yes | b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
No | c) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Louisiana high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
Yes | d) Do you support legalizing sports betting for the purpose of funding early childhood education programs?
e) Other or expanded principles: |
Yes | a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
No | b) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes | c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
I would consider support limited funding for development of renewable energies, but the majority of innovation is a product of market forces. As outlined by the works of economists like Friedman and Sowell, the market decides what is best for the market, and innovation is the means of raising market competition to the next level--not government intervention. |
No | a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
No | b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
Yes | c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
Yes | d) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
I am a teacher, and I'm perfectly okay with legislation that would allow a teacher to have a firearm in a classroom under certain criteria, namely that the teacher attend and complete additional training hours for a specialized permit and that the board and school administration in question would approve of the carry. |
Yes | a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
No | b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through Louisiana's health care programs?
No | c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
No | d) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
No | e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
While I'm a Conservative and believe that individuals should largely be left to their own free will, I question euthanasia, as some who would undergo such a procedure would not be of sound mind, a requirement for any legal decision. I don't mean this as a slight, but simply looking at this from a legalistic standpoint, there would at the very least be a question of the decision being made under duress. This could expand litigation which could drive up medical costs and cause a redefining of patient and care-provider rights that could prove troubling. |
No | a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Louisiana's anti-discrimination laws?
No | b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Louisiana's anti-discrimination laws?
No | c) Do you support greater efforts by Louisiana state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
I think people should do business with whomever they voluntarily choose. Businesses that discriminate based on orientation and gender will eventually be driven out of the market by consumer backlash. Involving the government does nothing but open a Pandora's box of requiring people to engage in market transactions instead of allowing them to happen voluntarily. That is the antithesis of a free market economy. As to the gender pay gap, this has been debunked numerous times, even by the same pair who initiated the original study. |
Additional priorities of my campaign include providing additional funding, training, and resources to law enforcement so that we may better curb the growing tide of human trafficking as well as the homicide rate that per capita has led the nation for 30 years. As a teacher, I would also like to see changes made to our educational system that would allow teachers and parents to have more of a say legislatively and curriculum-wise as to what goes on with their students.
My top priority is the lowering of taxes across the board. Our corporate income tax runs from 4%-7% while states next door, like Texas, are at 1%. We also have the highest sales tax rates in the nation. Sure, we have low property taxes, but how can one afford property if their income is stymied. This also impacts employment figures and GDP. We have an inventory tax, which is paying taxes just to store the goods a business is selling after they've paid taxes to attain the goods and will be taxed again. Taxes are a poison for our economy. |
