Colorado Congressional Election 2020 Political Courage Test
|Pro-choice||Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?|
|Abortion is a medical decision between a person and their healthcare provider, and is protected by Supreme Court decisions in both Roe vs Wade and Planned Parenthood vs Casey. I am a women's healthcare provider, and voters will be pleased to know that I will follow the evidence presented by the immense success of the Colorado Family Planning Initiative; comprehensive sex education and free, long-acting contraception resulted in more than a 50% reduction in abortion. It was also fiscally responsible- for every dollar spent, we saved taxpayers seven on social safety nets. This model of care is responsible and cost-effective.|
|Yes||In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?|
|Yes||Do you support expanding federal funding to support entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare?|
|Social Security and Medicare provide immense support to older Americans that has been earned through a lifetime of paying into the system. Medicare should be expanded to provide truly comprehensive coverage including audiology, dental, vision, addiction treatment, and mental healthcare without a need for supplemental coverage. Medicare should be in charge of negotiating pharmaceutical pricing in order to bring down costs for all Americans. We need to update our entire healthcare system to align with the success of universal, single-payer systems in other countries. The data says that this is the most cost-effective, inclusive, efficient, and patient-centered model.|
|Yes||Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?|
|Fundraising should not be a part of campaigns. I support ending the influence of lobbyists and interest groups by developing a publicly-funded election system and abolishing PACs and Super PACs. Candidates qualify for funding by utilizing volunteers to gather petition signatures and then all candidates in the same race receive the same amount of funding. This levels the playing field and eliminates interest groups' ability to exert pressure upon politicians and the democratic process.|
|Yes||Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?|
|No||Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?|
|Yes||Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?|
|I support providing financial relief directly to businesses ONLY with strong measures to ensure employees are retained, paid appropriately, and that no funds are used for stock buybacks or bonuses to executives. Banks should not be allowed to profit off of these relief funds; they should be administered as grants directly to business, and prioritize small business with less than 100 employees.|
|Yes||Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?|
|Our public education system is suffering from unequal funding and low standards, which is compounded by the unprecedented challenges of the COVID pandemic. We must require states to take appropriate steps to ensure no students miss out on a quality education that doesn't put public health at risk. Schools that are already struggling due to underfunding must be prioritized to correct the imbalance that has happened over the last 50 years, and public dollars should not be directed to private schools.|
|Yes||Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?|
|Yes||Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?|
|Yes||Do you generally support gun-control legislation?|
|As a firearm owner, I support implementing common sense reforms to improve pubic safety and personal responsibility. All firearm purchases require a federal background check. Expand mental healthcare services through universal healthcare to save lives lost to suicide and homicide. Implement federal testing standards for education, mental health, and firearm proficiency to earn a license. Firearm owners are required to store weapons securely and are responsible for any crimes committed as a result of an unauthorized use of their firearm if theft isn't reported to local police.|
|No||Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?|
|Yes||Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?|
|Paid medical leave is not available to many of the most vulnerable members of our population. Creating a shared fund to provide stability to people during public health crises, when a family grows through childbirth or adoption, or when the individual or family member is ill is critical to protecting the financial security of all Americans.|
|No||Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?|
|No||Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?|
|Immigration reform is desperately needed. We must employ more judges and public defenders to process applications in a timely manner. We must meet our obligation to accept refugees fleeing violence, persecution, and poverty. We must also provide a path to citizenship for law-abiding members of our community who arrived as children. This is a matter of compassion, logic, and respecting our history as a nation of immigrants.|
|As a healthcare provider, I am determined to use my experience fighting for my patients to improve our system as a whole. We need to fully cover every person with a universal system funded through taxes instead of premiums. In order for our economy to recover from the COVID pandemic we must create federal programs to invest in infrastructure and create millions of jobs. This is an opportunity to transition to renewable resources and improve our neglected transportation systems. This would be funded through bonds and taxes. I will protect public lands, clean air and water through regulation and enforcement.|
