What is the Political Courage Test?

New York Congressional Election 2022 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes Do you support expanding federal funding to support social safety net programs such as Social Security and Medicare?
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations, unions, and individuals?
No Do you support the protection of government officials, including law enforcement officers, from personal liability in civil lawsuits concerning alleged misconduct?
State and local government officials who infringe on the constitutional rights of their citizens must be held accountable, but the doctrine of qualified immunity currently stands in the way. It is imperative, therefore, that we address this issue. This is why I joined Congresswoman Karen Bass in introducing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would, among other things, eliminate the defense of qualified immunity for federal, state, and local law enforcement officers.
No Do you support increasing defense spending?
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
Yes Do you support the federal government taking action, beyond those of the Federal Reserve, to alleviate inflation?
Yes Do you support the forgiveness of federal student loan debt?
No Do you support requiring a government-issued identification in order to vote at the polls?
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I introduced the Protecting Our Kids Act, one of the most all-encompassing, sweeping gun reform packages ever passed by the House. As a leader in the fight to reform our nation?s gun laws, I lead the Congressional debate on the Safer Communities Act, which would restrict violent abusers from accessing guns, deliver grants to states so that they could establish crucial red flag laws, and stem the flow of trafficked guns to New York. When President Biden signed that bill into law, it marked the most significant action in decades to address gun violence.
Yes Do you support a government-run (single-payer) healthcare program, such as Medicare-for-All?
Yes Do you support expanding paid family AND/OR medical leave opportunities?
Yes Do you support lowering the cost of prescription drugs?
No Do you support increasing security along the southern US border?
No Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Yes Do you support economic intervention as a means of resolving international conflicts?
Yes Do you support the U.S. providing increased offensive military aid to Ukraine?
Yes Do you support raising taxes, on any income or on any entity, to promote economic growth?
No Do you generally support removing barriers to international trade (for example: tariffs, quotas, etc.)?
It?s difficult to overstate the threats our democracy faces. A radical Supreme Court is erasing 50 years of settled abortion rights and an extremist Republican Party is turning back the clock on voting rights and standing by insurrectionists. As Chair of the Judiciary Committee, I?m on the frontlines in these battles. We enacted far-reaching gun control legislation and passed the assault weapons ban. I wrote and passed the Respect for Marriage Act to codify marriage equality no matter what the Supreme Court says. There are so many important fights to lead and more that I want to get done.
