Chairman Becerra: Evenwel Vs. Abbott Case Before Supreme Court Threatens Equal Representation For All Americans

Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (CA-34) released the following statement as the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in the case of Evenwel vs. Abbott:

"The law of the land is clear: every person in our country is guaranteed a right to equal representation. If the Supreme Court were to rule in favor of the plaintiff in Evenwel vs. Abbott, millions of Americans would be denied representation, a bedrock of our democracy. This ideologically driven lawsuit threatens to take us back to an era where many people -- African Americans, women and Latinos, among others -- were not counted under the law.

"When drawing electoral districts, we should ensure that every person counts, rather than finding ways to disenfranchise them. To rule in favor of the plantiff would undermine the democratic principles this great nation was built upon.
