Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings made the following statement after hosting a Social Security Town Hall at Kings Point, Tamarac. Joining Hastings at the Town Hall was Congressman John B. Larson of Connecticut, principal author of H.R. 1391, the Social Security 2100 Act.
"It should go without saying that Social Security is a promise to the American people that must be kept. Millions of Americans have benefited from the financial security provided by the program, enabling them to retire with dignity and live independently after a lifetime of hard work," said Congressman Hastings. "I commend the work that Congressman Larson has done to further strengthen Social Security, and am proud to be an original co-sponsor his legislation, the Social Security 2100 Act. This legislation would expand benefits for all current and future Social Security recipients, cut taxes for over 10 million seniors, and keep the system solvent for the rest of the century. More than 60 million people depend on the monthly retirement, survivor, and disability benefits that they receive through Social Security. I will continue working with Congressman Larson to ensure the system is kept strong, safe, and solvent for years to come."
"I am proud to work with Rep. Hastings on addressing our ongoing retirement crisis. Social Security is the backbone of our retirement system, and millions of seniors depend on it for the majority of their income. We must ensure they get the benefits they have paid for throughout a lifetime of hard work. Our plan will strengthen benefits, prevent Americans from retiring into poverty, and make sure seniors see a cost of living adjustment that actually reflects the costs they incur. I thank Rep. Hastings for his tireless work on behalf of seniors in Florida and across our country," said Congressman Larson.
