Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and representative for Downtown Los Angeles, issued the following statement after working with the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to authorize $19 million in federal funds to upgrade the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building and United States Courthouse ahead of the completion of the new U.S. courthouse in Downtown LA this summer. Renovation of the Roybal building will allow the U.S. District Court to vacate their current facility at 312 N. Spring Street and operate out of the Roybal building and the new courthouse.
"Today's $19 million federal investment in our courts is critical to our region. We needed it and we fought hard to get it.
"The federal courts in Los Angeles are among the busiest in the country. Renovating the Roybal Federal Building and U.S Courthouse eases angst over potential bottlenecks in the adjudication of trials.
"As citizens we deserve timely access to justice and as taxpayers it matters to us that we are able to consolidate federal court operations from three buildings to two."
