Chairman Becerra: Hr\R 4722 Changes The Rules For The Child Tax Credit And Unfairly Punishes Tax-Filing Immigrant Families

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (CA-34) released the following statement regarding today's Ways and Means Committee markup of a slew of bills that would hurt working families, especially children:

"The Child Tax Credit (CTC), one of the programs under attack today, has a proven record of helping working families. In 2013, the CTC lifted over 3 million people, including almost 2 million children, out of poverty. Children in families that receive the CTC are more likely to attend college and can often earn more as adults.

"HR 4722, which changes the rules for the Child Tax Credit, unfairly punishes U.S. citizen children of low-income, tax-filing immigrant families. These families work, pay taxes, file their tax returns, and qualify for the CTC. If we wish to tackle a broken immigration system or the issue of fraud, let's do so. But HR 4722 is not even a poor substitute for this purpose."
