Rep. Pompeo: "It is time for Congress to pass the Kelsey Smith Act."

Statement

Date: April 13, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Kansas Representative Mike Pompeo (KS-04) today released the following statement regarding the Energy and Commerce Committee, Communications and Technology Subcommittee hearing on the Kelsey Smith Act.

"It was close to eight years ago that Kelsey Smith, an amazing young woman from Overland Park, Kansas was abducted from a shopping center parking lot in broad daylight. This horrible crime was captured on a security camera outside the Target store she was visiting that day, to purchase an anniversary gift for her boyfriend.

"Her abduction wasn't done under the cover of night and there was no question about the urgency of the situation. It is just Kansas common sense that law enforcement should have a way to quickly find the location of a wireless telecommunications device if a person has been determined to be at risk of death or serious physical harm due to being kidnapped or reported missing.

"As a member of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, I strongly support this legislation and will work for its swift passage. It is time for Congress to act so that no parent has to watch time slip away during which their child could be saved.

"Through the hard work of Kelsey's parents Greg and Missey Smith, who shared their heartbreaking story with the Committee today, I am confident this bill will signed into law."
