Congressman John Sarbanes issued the following statement today as Democrats participated in a sit-in on the floor of the House of Representatives in an effort to urge Republicans to take action on gun safety reform.
"Today, I joined Congressman John Lewis of Georgia -- my colleague who led today's sit-in -- in calling on Speaker Ryan and House Republicans to listen to the majority of Americans who want to reduce gun violence. Congressman Lewis is a civil rights icon and knows better than most about what it takes to affect positive change in this country. Congress has a basic duty to protect the American people, and that means putting in place commonsense gun safety laws that could help reduce the frequency and carnage of mass shootings in America."
