Defending the American Energy Industry

Standing in support of the American energy industry, the House of Representatives passed two resolutions earlier today to express the sense of Congress opposing the President's proposals that will hurt American energy producers.

H. Con. Res. 89 states Congress' belief that initiating a carbon tax would harm the American economy, increase prices and impact American global competitiveness. Coupled with H. Con. Res. 89 is H. Con. Res. 112, which states opposition to a new $10 tax on every barrel of oil. By adding this new tax, according to H. Con. Res. 112, American families will be hit with an increase in gasoline prices and employees in the oil and gas sector may face layoffs.

After today's vote, Congressman Bob Gibbs released the following statement:

"We are blessed with the natural resources and workforce to maintain America's position as a global energy leader. Yet once again, the President proposes energy policies that will hurt our global standing, and hurt American workers and American struggling to pay their energy bills. We cannot tax, mandate, and regulate the American economy into prosperity. Responsible energy policies, those that unleash the American spirit of entrepreneurship and ingenuity, are the only way to encourage a flourishing energy industry."
