Senator Sheldon Whitehouse today lauded the Supreme Court's ruling in Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, which rejected Texas's efforts to interfere with a woman's constitutionally-protected right to make her own health care decisions.

"Today's ruling by the Supreme Court is one of the most important for women's health care since Roe v. Wade," said Whitehouse. "This landmark decision strikes down barriers erected by politicians to block access to safe and legal abortion. As Justice Ginsburg wrote in her concurrence, "It is beyond rational belief that H. B. 2 could genuinely protect the health of women.' We have to keep fighting against these kinds of attacks on women's constitutional rights to ensure that all women can make their own health care decisions, no matter their zip code."

In January, Whitehouse joined 163 Members of Congress in sending an amicus brief to the Supreme Court that called on the justices to uphold its decision in Roe v. Wade and reject efforts to undermine women's reproductive rights.
