Scott Votes to Stop Sanctuary Cities, Supports Efforts to Keep Americans Safe

In a push to protect American families, U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) today voted for both the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act, introduced by Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) and the Stop Illegal Reentry Act, introduced by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). The Stop Illegal Reentry Act is better known as Kate's Law, named after Kate Steinle, who was murdered in broad daylight in San Francisco by an illegal immigrant who had already been deported five times and had seven felony convictions.

"Sanctuary cities are not providing safety, shelter, or security," said Scott. "By refusing to comply with federal immigration laws and immigration authorities, these cities are knowingly creating an environment where repeat offenders can go without fear of repercussions."

Scott added, ""As long as these cities exist, criminals like the one who took Kate Steinle's life literally out of her father's arms will continue to have sanctuary. It is time to secure the border, and stop sanctuary cities."

If passed, both bills would help to improve the cooperation between local law enforcement and federal authorities, and would also increase the criminal penalties for offenders. Specifically, the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act would withhold certain federal funds from jurisdictions that limit law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration officials. The Stop Illegal Reentry Act would create a five-year mandatory minimum for anyone convicted of illegal reentry and would increase the maximum penalty for illegal reentry from two to five years.
