Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Michigan AG Bill Schuette Joining Lawsuit Opposing Administration Guidance Protecting Transgender Students

Statement

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced that he would join the lawsuit to block the Administration's recent directive to protect transgender students:

"To say I am disappointed in Attorney General Bill Schuette's decision to defend discrimination in Michigan is an understatement. Transgender students deserve the same treatment as everyone else. Michigan deserves better than this.

"This lawsuit is designed to exclude one sector of our population -- transgender individuals -- from federal protections. Transgender people face numerous obstacles throughout their lives, the Administration's guidance is simply to protect them in their schools.

"Attorney General Bill Schuette has already wasted millions in taxpayer dollars defending Michigan's discriminatory same-sex marriage ban. He and our state officials should be working to fix the many pressing problems in our state such as crumbling roads and the lack of access to safe drinking water in Flint, not on continuing discriminatory practices against LGBT Michiganders."
