Fact Check: Ashford Starts Campaign Season By Misleading Nebraskans

Press Release

Date: Aug. 3, 2016
Issues: Constitution

This week, the Ashford campaign released their first campaign commercial. In the television spot, Brad Ashford is quoted as saying "in Washington, I worked with Republicans to fix Obamacare and pass a Balanced Budget Amendment." This statement is a complete contradiction of the facts.

FACT: The term Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) is very specific as it refers to a joint resolution proposing an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

FACT: The 114th Congress has not voted on a BBA to the U.S. Constitution.

FACT: The last time the House of Representatives voted on a BBA was in 2011.

FACT: Ashford, like many members, has introduced his own version of a BBA.

FACT: Ashford's proposal has no Republican cosponsors. Also, Ashford has not cosponsored any Republican-led BBA efforts.

"This advertisement reveals the truth that Brad Ashford will pretend to be whatever he thinks people want him to be -- in this case, a bipartisan budget hawk. To make matters worse, Brad Ashford hasn't even voted yes on a single congressional budget resolution in the last year. Nebraska citizens deserve better than to have elected officials who will say or do just about anything to hold onto an office," said Don Bacon.
