Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez Announces Support for Proposition 54

Press Release

Date: Oct. 11, 2016
Location: Orange, CA

Today, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez announced her support for California Proposition 54, which would require bills to be printed and published online at least 72 hours prior to a final vote in the State Assembly or Senate, giving the public and legislators time to thoroughly review legislation before it is passed.

Sanchez cited government transparency and the proposition's potential to dwindle the influence of special interests as the reason for her support: "I am deeply committed to ensuring our government is transparent, open and accountable. This is essential for a healthy democracy. Not only does Proposition 54 greatly increase transparency by ensuring proposed laws are available for public review prior to votes, but it reduces the influence of special interests by giving citizens the opportunity to discuss proposals. No longer will special interests be able to slip last-minute deals into policy behind closed doors."

The proposition also requires audiovisual recordings of public proceedings to be posted online 24 hours after they occur and allows the public to make their own recordings of legislative proceedings.

"Increasing access to information about policy allows more people to engage in our political process. This gives voters a voice," said Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. The Congresswoman's support for Proposition 54 is consistent with her advocacy throughout her twenty years in Congress for increasing transparency in government as well as her commitment to curbing the influence of special interests.
