Rep. Takano: Executive Actions on Immigration Are Inhumane, Wasteful, and Unconstitutional

Statement

Date: Jan. 25, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif) released the following statement in response to President Trump's executive order calling for a wall on America's southern border and the targeting of sanctuary cities.

"Today, President Donald Trump issued an executive order on immigration that is inhumane, wasteful, and illegal. Instead of investing in America's schools, rebuilding our infrastructure, or cutting taxes on the middle class, the president is moving forward with the construction of a border wall that will cost American taxpayers billions of dollars while failing to address the challenges in our immigration system.

"In addition, his plan to coerce sanctuary cities into compliance with deportations is plainly unconstitutional and disregards the humanity of the undocumented families living peaceful and productive lives across the country, not to mention the vital role they play in many local economies.

"In his typical fashion, President Trump has introduced a policy based on ignorance, xenophobia, and lies. It's time for us to recognize that his reckless campaign promises should be taken both literally and seriously, and we must resist them at every turn."
