Senator Kamala D. Harris Announces Opposition to Senator Jeff Sessions' Nomination for United States Attorney General

Statement

Speaking at the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. labor breakfast this morning, U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) announced her opposition to the nomination of U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) for U.S. Attorney General.

Harris cited Sessions' "troubling pattern" of disregard for some of the most vulnerable communities and his history of undermining the sacred right to vote, as reasons for her opposition.

After the breakfast, Harris released the following statement:

"I will oppose Senator Jeff Sessions' nomination for U.S. Attorney General when it comes to the floor for a vote. I have and will continue to support fair and thorough hearings for all nominees, but nothing in Senator Sessions' confirmation process has mitigated my concerns about his troubling record over four decades in public service. During his career, Senator Sessions has demonstrated disregard for laws that protect the rights of Americans. He has opposed policies that protect LGBT Americans and immigrant communities from discrimination, he failed to support the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act, and he has defended policies that deprive individuals the ability to exercise their fundamental right to vote.

"The office of United States Attorney General is not just a cabinet position, it is a symbol of our country's values and commitment to our constitutional guarantees of equal protection under the law. We must have an Attorney General who advocates for every American, including the voiceless and vulnerable, and fights every day for a more safe and equitable country for all families to live. Senator Sessions has not shown he will do that."
