Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson's Statement on U.S. Military Airstrike in Syria

Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. military airstrike in Syria:

"Last night's military airstrike in Syria was a bold but necessary response to the use of chemical weapons by Bashar al-Assad that killed dozens of people, including many children. The images of their excruciating pain will be forever seared in our minds and as the leader of the free world the United States cannot ignore such an atrocity.

"It was, however, just a first step toward addressing the civil war in Syria and the Assad regime, so President Trump will need to follow up the airstrikes with a cohesive plan of action that clearly defines strategies and goals for both Syria and the region. Moreover, before the president makes any more aggressive moves against Syria, he will need congressional authorization for military action as required by the Constitution.

"District 24 is war weary and America is war weary. There has to be a way to remove Assad, a brutal dictator, without military intervention by the United States of America. We have to work with our allies in the region and our foes in the region who I am sure are aware of what an all-out war would mean to the world given the easy access to chemical weapons by unstable countries in that region of the world.

"I await a comprehensive strategy from President Trump that Congress can review and ascertain the risks to America and the world, and then respond to the White House accordingly."
