Rep. Ellison Statement on Recent Anti-Semitic Attacks

Statement

Date: Feb. 21, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement after a Jewish cemetery was desecrated in St. Louis and a number of Jewish day schools were targeted with bomb threats around the country.

"After another round of bomb threats at Jewish day schools around the country, and the horrifying desecration of a Jewish cemetery, it is becoming increasingly clear that anti-Semites in America are emboldened. They feel more freedom to operate under an administration and a Republican Congress that refuses to denounce their behavior. There has always been an intersection between right wing extremism and anti-Semitism. Today that relationship is as clear as it's ever been. Progressives everywhere have a responsibility to denounce these attacks and stand in defense of our brothers and sisters who have been targeted by far-right hatred. Because an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.

"People who throw pigs' blood at mosques, vilify Central American refugees, and desecrate Jewish cemeteries all do so from the same nexus of hatred. And they do it with the tacit approval of the President. Racism, sexism, islamophobia, and anti-Semitism have all been given a green light by Donald Trump -- a man who was elected president despite making racist comments about immigrants and refugees, admitting to sexually assaulting women, scapegoating Muslims, and refusing to condemn "alt-right" supporters who hate Jews in his name.

"To everyone who has been targeted by these extremists in the 5th District, and throughout Minnesota, know my office is always open and I am always here for you. Please contact my office if you feel threatened.

"We stand with you."
