House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today following reports of North Korea testing an intercontinential ballistic missile:

"If reports that North Korea has successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile are true, it highlights the serious and ongoing threat that North Korea poses to the United States and our allies. As the U.S. intelligence community conducts its assessment, the United States should proceed in a deliberate fashion, including consulting with our allies and exploring all diplomatic means to stop North Korea's menacing nuclear program.

"As part of that effort, I hope the Administration will take steps to get a better handle on North Korea's revenue sources, as well as preserve American leadership in the region through diplomatic engagement and enhanced military cooperation.

"Congress is united in ensuring the U.S. continues to lead in standing up against North Korea and halting its nuclear program."
