Rep. Jenkins Announces Permanent Fix for Miners' Benefits

Press Release

Date: May 1, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) announced today that a deal has been reached to permanently secure healthcare benefits for our miners. House Speaker Paul Ryan sent a letter to Rep. Jenkins with more details on the agreement, which solves a critical issue for tens of thousands of miners in West Virginia and across the nation.

Rep. Jenkins has worked for months behind the scenes with House and Senate leadership, urging them to provide a permanent fix to a vital issue for our miners -- an issue that miners have been asking to be fixed for years.

"This permanent solution to protect these benefits is a victory for our miners, their families, and their widows. I worked closely with House Speaker Paul Ryan and our leadership to ensure a permanent solution was reached, and I thank him on behalf of all of our miners and their families for his commitment to protecting these benefits. We have now secured peace of mind for our miners after years and years of uncertainty.

"I have heard from countless mining families worried about losing these crucial benefits. These miners worked their whole lives to make our country truly great, and they deserve these hard-earned benefits. They aren't asking for a handout or a bailout, just what they were promised. Their voices have been heard loud and clear, and we are keeping the promise."
