Congressman Garamendi Commends Congress on Passing Sanctions against Russia, North Korea, and Iran

Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, Davis, Yuba City, CA), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, praised the passage in the House of Representatives of a sanctions package targeting Russia, North Korea, and Iran. The sanctions are designed to punish Iran and North Korea for their ballistic missile activity, and Russia for its actions in Syria and for its interference in the 2016 presidential election. Just as importantly, the legislation requires the Trump administration to report to Congress if it desires to weaken or end the sanctions against Russia, and allows Congress to forbid any attempt to do so.

"This bill does two very important things," said Garamendi. First, it sends a strong message to our adversaries that the United States will respond seriously to their destabilizing actions across the globe. Second, with this bill, Congress has ensured that no matter how much President Trump may wish to please Vladimir Putin, he won't be able to weaken these sanctions against Russia without the consent of Congress."

The legislation allows leaders from either party in both the House and the Senate to force their chamber to consider an objection to any White House action on weakening or altering sanctions. The bipartisan bill passed the House by a vote of 419-3.
