House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on North Korea's most recent ballistic missile test:
"North Korea's latest ballistic missile test is a clear provocation and risks destabilizing the entire region. The United States will continue to stand by our allies Japan and the Republic of Korea in a common defense against North Korean aggression. We will not be intimidated by the reckless actions of a dictator who enslaves his nation.
"The way to meet this challenge is not through bluster or posturing but through serious engagement with our allies and with China. We must rally the world against this threat and make it clear to the Kim regime that its only path to stability is through denuclearization and an abandonment of its ballistic missile program. Congress must be ready to impose punishing sanctions that can bring North Korea to this realization, and possible additional sanctions on Russian- and Chinese-linked commerce with North Korea will be critical to their efficacy. It's time to bring to bear all the tools of diplomacy and strength to show resolve and work with our allies to meet this common threat."
