Peters Statement on Trump Administration Decision to Rescind DACA Program

Statement

Date: Sept. 5, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) today issued the following statement after the Trump Administration announced plans to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for young men and women brought to the United States as children.

"I strongly disagree with today's decision, which is unfair to thousands of Michiganders who voluntarily came out of the shadows and only creates instability for these young people who are now at risk of losing the only home they have ever known.

"The DACA program has helped provide relief to thousands of hardworking young people who were brought to this country through no fault of their own, and it is completely irresponsible for the Trump Administration to end this program with no alternative in place. Immigrants are essential to the fabric of our nation, strengthening our communities and launching new businesses that create jobs. Now more than ever, Congress must take the lead and pass comprehensive immigration reform that will provide certainty to DREAMers, address our broken immigration system, keep families together and strengthen our economy."
