Congresswoman Barbara Lee: Senate Republicans Just Betrayed the American People

Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement after Senate Republicans passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act:

"Today Senate Republicans passed a tax scam that will make it harder for working people to get ahead. Let me be clear: this terrible bill was written to line the pockets of millionaires, billionaires and special interests. President Trump and Republicans in Congress have traveled the country pretending that this bill will benefit the middle class. Nothing could be further from the truth.

"The Congressional Budget Office reported that the bill Senate Republicans just jammed through Congress would have devastating effects on low-income and middle-income families. Just this week, the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) revealed that 80% of all households will face tax increases by 2027 if this bill is signed into law. The JCT also reported that, even taking into consideration the supposed economic growth from these tax cuts, this horrible bill will add at least $1 trillion to the deficit.

"To make matters worse, Senate Republicans use this cruel hearted bill to deal a gut wrenching blow to the Affordable Care Act. By repealing the individual mandate, this tax scam would strip health care from 13 million Americans. It also triggers automatic cuts to Medicare by up to $25 billion in 2018 alone.

"The simple truth is that millions of Americans will be devastated by the Republicans' billionaire-first tax plan. Republicans in Congress have rubber-stamped President Trump's greedy, un-American agenda - an agenda that does nothing but betray the American people."
