Matsui Denounces House Republican Passage of GOP Tax Scam

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) issued the following statement on the House passage of the H.R. 1 conference report, the Republican tax bill:

"Republicans have proven with today's vote that they are more concerned with special interests than middle class families, more interested in helping corporations than American workers, more attentive to their political interests than the future of our country.

"In fact, in this bill, 83% of the tax benefits go to the top 1%. At a time when the children's health insurance program and community health centers are running out of money, when DREAMers in this country fear for their future, when communities reeling from our nation's opioid crisis are in need of resources, Republicans have prioritized tax breaks for the privileged few.

"We know this bill hits states like California particularly hard, penalizing residents by limiting the state and local tax deduction that my constituents depend on. And, it sabotages the Affordable Care Act by including a provision that will result in millions losing health coverage and lead to insurance premium hikes for families.

"To make matters worse, this tax scam will be used as an excuse for the GOP to make cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Republicans will have to answer to the American people when families' earned benefits and social services are scaled back as a result of this tax bill.

"This is not how we should be governing. I urge my Senate colleagues to vote no on this irresponsible legislation."
