Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, Davis, Yuba City, CA), a member of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, which is tasked with defending the United States against nuclear threats, released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration's refusal to comply with the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action to restrict Iran's nuclear program:
"Today, the Trump Administration declared, contrary to all available evidence, that Iran has not been abiding by the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), thus reimposing sanctions on a nuclear program that does not currently exist. With this decision, President Trump has chosen to forsake years of careful diplomacy, worsen relations with our allies and adversaries alike, and weaken America's standing as a reliable negotiating partner.
"The JCPOA has been accomplishing what it was designed to do: prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. We don't yet know what the consequences of Trump's decision will be, but the end result is highly unlikely to be a better deal for the United States, and far more likely to be an outcome that harms regional and global stability."
