Sarbanes Statement on Latest Republican Anti-Immigration Bill

Date: June 27, 2018
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today after voting against House Republicans' so-called "compromise" immigration bill, which failed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 121-301:

"House Republicans' latest effort to undermine our nation's values would harm families, hurt American businesses, cripple our legal immigration system and ignore the American public's call for bipartisan action on this important issue. The bill would continue to hold DREAMers hostage, keep children locked in detention centers for months on end, make it harder for those fleeing violence and persecution to apply for asylum and waste billions of taxpayer dollars on President Trump's far-fetched border wall. If President Trump and Congressional Republicans were serious about immigration reform, they would reach across the aisle and work with Democrats to put forward a solution that strengthens -- not weakens -- our nation's immigration system."
