Pingree Statement on SCOTUS's Latest Assault on Workers' Rights

Statement

Date: June 27, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's decision on the landmark Illinois public employee union case, Janus v. AFSCME:

"Unions have been under attack by powerful interests for decades because they are one of the most effective ways for workers to gain leverage in an economy rigged for corporate interests and the wealthy. It's appalling to see the Supreme Court join in. Today's decision is not only a blow to public sector unions, but everyone they represent--members or not. In undermining collective bargaining as a whole, it also weakens a tool that is sorely needed by all Americans who are working hard but struggling to get ahead.

"This is just the latest Supreme Court decision to advance a hard-line conservative agenda using a spot on the bench that Senator Mitch McConnell stole for President Trump. In this ruling--as well as upholding the President's Muslim ban, siding with deceptive anti-abortion organizations, and allowing discrimination of the LGBTQ community under the guise of religious freedom--the current makeup of the Supreme Court has shown it will not protect our country from President Trump's overreach of power or the radical agenda he pushes."
