Dr. Bucshon Supports Bipartisan Solution to Promote Greater Student Financial Literacy, Help Address the Burden of Student Debt

Statement

Date: Sept. 5, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08) released the following statement after voting in support of the Empowering Students through Enhanced Financial Counseling Act (H.R. 1635):

"Today, we have a generation of students carrying a combined student loan dept of over $1.4 trillion. For those who have incurred an unmanageable amount of student loan debt, it can negatively impact their ability to launch their professional life and pursue their version of the American Dream. It is critical that students have the information and tools they need to make responsible choices in paying for college, but unfortunately existing financial literacy assistance requirements are simply too limited and ineffective. The Empowering Students through Enhanced Financial Counseling Act will provide additional counseling tailored to students' personal situations to help them fully understand financial consequences of the decisions they make. By requiring annual counseling that includes recommendations for students to exhaust available grants, work-study, and scholarship assistance, we will be providing the information and tools students need to help make responsible financial decisions when paying for a post-secondary education."
