Press Release

Date: Oct. 17, 2018
Location: Chesterfield, VA
Issues: Drugs

Today, Congressman Dave Brat had the opportunity to co-host an open, honest conversation with Sheriff Karl Leonard and 100 inmates in recovery from opioid abuse.

"As a Christian, we love the least of these -- we visit those in prison. As a Member of Congress, one of the most moving experiences I have in this job is talking with recovering men and women fighting to rebuilding their lives. Sheriff Leonard has become one of the leading voices in our community for his efforts combating the opioid epidemic and the work he has done helping addicts find recovery."

Below is a clip of a conversation between Congressman Brat, and a constituent who is coming out of jail soon, and was seeking counsel as she prepares for the rest of her life. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1bmOUpHvluBbVGCOHCOUQCm-nQkzZDtDX

Brat has made helping opioid victims a centerpiece of his time in Washington. His bill was included in the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act which passed the House and Senate and was sent to the President's desk to be signed into law. Brat also introduced legislation to get more money to recovery programs that are fighting this epidemic.
