Issue Position: Achieve Affordable Housing

Date: Jan. 1, 2018

Housing is a human right--not a commodity. Every person deserves to live in a safe, quality, affordable home. The market cannot meet the needs of working people. Therefore, it is the government's obligation to ensure affordable housing, protect renters from predatory landlords, and prevent gentrification.

Increase funding for affordable housing and public housing:
Allocate funds through massive housing bonds,
Implement a tax on luxury single-family homes, condos, and rental units
Invest state resources in non-market affordable housing strategies such as cooperative-housing models and community land trusts
Repeal the state preemption of municipal efforts to stabilize rents
Pass a renter's bill of rights--including a just-cause eviction law and tenant's right of first refusal
Combat housing discrimination by passing "ban the box' for rental applications
