Statement from Congressman Denny Heck Regarding Offensive Tweets by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar

Statement

Date: Feb. 11, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Following insensitive and anti-Semitic comments made by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar on Twitter, Congressman Denny Heck (WA-10) released the following statement:

"First of all, I think it would do a lot of good if many of my colleagues refrained from spreading hate and intolerance, as well as any insults and personal attacks, via tweet. It sounds obvious, but it needed to be said. We need to be role models and treat everyone with respect, even if we don't always get it.

"And none of us, including Representative Ilhan Omar, can be effective if we choose to create division and target particular groups of people with our statements. I stand with our Jewish-American neighbors, and that does not mean I am beholden to any particular group. I do it because it's the right thing to do. I'm relieved Representative Omar apologized, and I know we can all move on from this and get to a place where we can respect each other and make progress together."
