Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett Veterans Day Statement
Congresswoman Stacey. E. Plaskett released the following statement in commemoration of Veterans Day:
"Veterans Day is a time to honor our men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, to demonstrate our appreciation for the sacrifices our Veterans have made and to promote peace so that their sacrifices will not have been in vain. Veterans Day is one of our country's most important days of observance as we pay tribute to those who defend our freedom. The U.S. Virgin Islands has one of the highest rates of military service in our country. I would like to thank every Veteran from the Virgin Islands who has served and currently serving for their incredible sacrifice to our great nation.
"Too many of our returning Veterans have difficulty transitioning from military service back to civilian life in our communities. To address this issue, I re-introduced the Hire-A-Hero Act of 2019. This bill will allow small businesses a work opportunity tax credit (WOTC) for hiring a member of the National Guard or Ready Reserve and make the WOTC credit permanent with respect to the hiring of qualified Veterans and members of the National Guard and Reserve Component. Additionally, this week, I hosted two town halls in St. Thomas and St. Croix to address Veterans issues in our community.
"While we spend this day honoring their service, we should recommit ourselves to ensure that Veterans have the services that they need. I continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to ensure that the Department of Veterans Affairs has the necessary resources to recruit and hire medical providers, and increase employment, education and housing opportunities.
"Today, we come together as a nation to share our deep and longstanding appreciation for the service and sacrifice of America's Veterans and their families. We may never be able to fully repay the debt we owe our Veterans, but we must do everything we can to fulfill our commitment to them."
