Engel Receives "A" Rating on End Citizens United Legislative Scorecard

Congressman Eliot Engel is pleased to announce he has received an "A" rating from the campaign finance reform advocacy group End Citizens United on their inaugural Legislative Scorecard. Announced on the 10th anniversary of the Supreme Court's disastrous Citizens United decision, the scorecard tracks Members' support for legislation to end the dominance of big money in politics, restore ethics in Washington, and protect and expand the right to vote.

"Congressman Engel is a champion in the fight to end the dominance of big money in politics and protect the security and integrity of our elections. He knows our democracy works best when every voice is heard and counted. We're proud to give him an 'A' on our 2019 legislative scorecard," said Tiffany Muller, President of End Citizens United Action Fund.

Along with his original co-sponsorship of the transformational, anti-corruption For the People Act (H.R. 1), Engel received his "A" grade based on his support for legislation to end the dominance of big money in politics, protect our elections from foreign interference, and ensure every eligible voter can cast a ballot free from discrimination.

"I am very proud of my "A' rating on the End Citizens United Scorecard, which I believe demonstrates my commitment to establishing an electoral system that reflects the value of everyday Americans, not corporate interests," Engel said. "10 years ago, the Supreme Court made an awful ruling with their Citizens United decision and our democracy has been paying the price ever since. Let's be clear: money is not speech. Our democracy shouldn't belong to the person--or corporation--with the deepest pockets. We deserve better and that's why, in addition to cosponsoring H.R. 1, I've authored H.J.Res.9, a Constitutional Amendment that would rid us of money in politics and fix our electoral system. Campaign finance reform is critical, but it isn't enough; we need to also get rid of the Electoral College, bring an end to partisan gerrymandering, codify the Voting Rights Act and enact automatic voter registration at the federal level to ensure our democracy reflects the will of the people. These are the things I will continue fighting for in Congress."
