Representative John Carter (TX-31) released the following statement after the House passed the CARES Act.

"In a time when the Coronavirus is sweeping across the nation, putting lives and livelihoods in danger, my sole priority is protecting the safety, health, and stability of the American people. Just in my community, I've heard from hundreds of small business owners trying to keep their doors open. Those businesses, their employees and countless others need immediate relief. I strongly support the CARES Act, phase three of Congress' Coronavirus response legislation. We are in an unprecedented time, and it requires bold action to battle not only the virus, but also the economic downfall caused by the virus. This bill will provide much needed relief for those who need it most by sending direct funds to about 80% of the population, expanding unemployment benefits and providing funding to industries, small business, and nonprofits.

"As the top Republican on the Veterans funding committee, I have been working with my staff and my colleagues on the other side of the aisle for a week to provide over $19 billion to the Department of Veterans Affairs and our nation's veterans. Many veterans are considered at high risk for COVID-19, and we've taken significant action to help provide additional medical supplies, increase telehealth services, and quickly expand bed space to help treat those that are ill, while keeping other veterans under VA care healthy.

"These are challenging times, but Congress is working together to provide relief for the American people. Our country and its people are resilient and strong. When we unite, we can get through anything, and we will get through this."
